Internship in the USA

Intern Stateside

As the saying goes, 'If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.' We offer sponsorship, J-1 visa assistance, and in-country support, giving you the opportunity to intern in the USA for up to 18 months.

What are the benefits of interning in America?

We’ve all seen it in the movies – the intern. In reality, the United States boasts a robust internship culture, with nearly every industry, from finance to food, offering paid or unpaid internship programs. Many U.S. college graduates also complete at least one summer or longer-term internship before starting their careers.

In today’s competitive job market, having a U.S. internship on your resume can be a game changer. It’s an opportunity to receive world-class training, expand your professional network, and demonstrate your ambition to work abroad. Plus, you’ll get to experience life as a local in iconic cities like New York, Los Angeles, Boston, or Austin... (choose your dream city when you find your perfect internship).

How It Functions

Applying for a J-1 visa to intern in the USA can be a complex process, but we make it easy by guiding you every step of the way. The first step is securing an internship offer. We’ll provide you with clear details on the specific requirements and advise you on the types of companies to target. Once you have your placement, you’ll need a US sponsor. We’ve partnered with CIEE, the largest and most trusted sponsor in the USA, to support you. Our team will then take over, ensuring that your internship meets visa requirements, verifying your host company (if needed), and initiating the sponsorship process. Once we have your Certificate of Eligibility (DS-2019), we’ll assist you with your J-1 visa application and offer ongoing support during your stay, including regular check-ins and 24/7 assistance.

Who Is Eligible to Apply

The Intern USA program is open to more than just students. To participate, you must qualify for one of two J-1 visas: the Intern visa (for current full-time students or recent graduates within the last 12 months), or the Trainee visa (for individuals with at least five years of experience in the field related to your internship). See the eligibility criteria below for further details.

Visa Information

Like all J-1 visas, the Intern visa is both a work and cultural exchange visa, intended for international students and professional trainees to immerse themselves in American life. Depending on the duration of your placement and visa type, you’ll receive a visa valid for 1 to 12 months, or 1 to 18 months, with an additional 30 days allowed for travel within the United States after your program ends.

Securing Your Internship

All participants in the Intern USA program are responsible for securing their own internship. However, our team is available to guide you through the placement requirements, and if you're having difficulty finding the right fit, we can connect you with trusted placement partners who can assist. Your internship offer must meet the following criteria set by the U.S. Department of State:

  • The position must be a training role, not a regular job.
  • It must be a full-time position.
  • No more than 20% of the work can be clerical or basic tasks, and it must not involve unskilled labor.
  • The internship should support your future career goals and include a structured training plan.
  • The work should be supplementary to the employer’s regular staffing needs.
  • Unpaid internships are permitted for up to six months, while paid internships can last up to 12 months (or 18 months on a Trainee visa).

Please note that internships in fields like medicine, teaching, social work, manual labor, and most areas of the arts (except Arts Administration) are not eligible for this program.

Visa Eligibility Requirements

We can sponsor passport holders from most countries, but you must meet the eligibility requirements for one of the following visas. In addition to the criteria listed below, you must be located outside the USA at the time of application and have sufficient funds to support yourself during your internship.

J-1 Intern Visa

To qualify for the J-1 Intern visa, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be aged 18-38.
  • Be a current full-time student at the degree level, studying outside the USA, or have graduated within the last 12 months.
  • Be at least halfway through your degree program before starting your internship.
  • Your internship must be related to your field of academic study.
  • You must have a confirmed internship offer lasting between 1 and 12 months when applying for your visa.
J-1 Trainee Visa

To qualify for the J-1 Trainee visa, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be aged 18-38.
  • Hold a degree plus at least one year of work experience in the field you're interning in, or have a minimum of five years of relevant work experience. You will need to provide references to verify this.
  • Your internship must be related to your previous work or academic experience.
  • You must have a confirmed internship offer lasting between 1 and 18 months when applying for your visa.
